Ilana recently spent two weeks (July 22-Aug3) in Borroloola to (finally) begin recording new Garrwa conversations. She met up with Glenn Wightman of the NT Department of the Environment and Natural resources to work on a book of Garrwa plant and animal knowledge with Miriam Charlie, Shirley Simon, Peggy Mawson, Majorie Keighran, Katie Baker, Alan Baker, William Kidd and Daphne Mawson. By recording the work done with these strong Garrwa speakers, we were not only able to record ordinary conversations (especially during meal breaks), but also the negotiation of plant and animal knowledge across people who may have different recollections. Despite this being the dry season, we spent a lot of time sitting by beautiful water.
